Apply online through the CET website to put in your Expression of Interest. This will trigger an application link that will be sent to you via email.
The closing date will be advertised on the CET webpage — usually in the last week of August.
Shortlisting occurs soon after the closing date. Interviews are conducted over the following weeks and may occur in stages depending on available places.
The panel consists of the Teaching Schools Director, northern and southern STATSI Coordinators, and a representative from CET’s People and Culture team.
As interviews and referee checks take time, offers are typically sent out in early November.
Yes, you are welcome to apply again in the following year.
The number of cadetship places varies based on the number of graduates, budget considerations, and the institute’s growth.
Yes. While most cadets attend UTAS, others are enrolled in various registered Australian universities offering online teaching degrees.
You must have at least two years remaining in your degree to meet cadetship requirements, including Accreditation C to teach Religious Education.
If you need to slow your study due to personal or family reasons, discuss this with your coordinator. The cadetship may be extended by up to one year with approval.
You must seek approval from the Teaching Schools Director (cc your coordinator). Permission will depend on your workload and well-being, and will be assessed case-by-case.
Yes, as long as it does not interfere with your studies or cadetship commitments.
We aim to place cadets close to their home region. You won’t be required to travel across the state for your weekly immersion day.
Where possible, we aim for you to experience a range of settings by moving schools or classrooms during your time in STATSI, unless distance makes this impractical.
No. Coordinators and the Director work with principals to assign mentors that best suit your development needs. You’ll be consulted before final placement.
Any change must be approved by your coordinator and suit both the school and your mentor.
You’ll receive regular feedback from your mentor, coordinator, and university. Coordinators also conduct school visits, and you’ll have reflection opportunities throughout your journey.
Speak with your coordinator to discuss your situation. If you choose to leave, the Director will be notified and a formal process will follow due to your contract with CET.
Cadets are paid at a Teacher Assistant rate, working 7.6 hours per day and 30.4 hours per fortnight.
Cadets work two full days per week — one in school and one (usually Thursday) at a CET centre. If the school day is shorter than 7.6 hours, remaining time should be used for preparation and study.
Yes. Cadet wages are averaged across 52 weeks, meaning consistent pay over holidays and practicum periods. You may also be eligible for government funding during practicums.
Yes. We actively support cadets in securing ongoing roles in Catholic Education Tasmania. You’ll list your preferred schools in your final year, though placement depends on available positions.
We encourage all graduates to remain with CET for at least two years after qualifying as teachers.
