Application Process

How do I apply?

Apply online through the CET website to put in your Expression of Interest. This will trigger an application link that will be sent to you via email.

When do applications close?

The closing date will be advertised on the CET webpage — usually in the last week of August.

How soon after that will I find out if I have been selected for an interview?

Shortlisting occurs soon after the closing date. Interviews are conducted over the following weeks and may occur in stages depending on available places.

Who will be on the interview panel?

The panel consists of the Teaching Schools Director, northern and southern STATSI Coordinators, and a representative from CET’s People and Culture team.

How soon after the interview will I receive notification of my success?

As interviews and referee checks take time, offers are typically sent out in early November.

If I am unsuccessful, can I apply next year?

Yes, you are welcome to apply again in the following year.

Eligibility and Study Requirements

How many places are offered each year?

The number of cadetship places varies based on the number of graduates, budget considerations, and the institute’s growth.

Can I choose my university?

Yes. While most cadets attend UTAS, others are enrolled in various registered Australian universities offering online teaching degrees.

Can I begin partway through my degree?

You must have at least two years remaining in your degree to meet cadetship requirements, including Accreditation C to teach Religious Education.

What happens if I want to slow down my study?

If you need to slow your study due to personal or family reasons, discuss this with your coordinator. The cadetship may be extended by up to one year with approval.

What happens when I am eligible for a Limited Authority to Teach (LAT)?

You must seek approval from the Teaching Schools Director (cc your coordinator). Permission will depend on your workload and well-being, and will be assessed case-by-case.

Can I work in another job while completing my cadetship?

Yes, as long as it does not interfere with your studies or cadetship commitments.

Placement and Mentorship

Will I need to travel far to my school during the cadetship?

We aim to place cadets close to their home region. You won’t be required to travel across the state for your weekly immersion day.

Will I move schools or classes during my cadetship?

Where possible, we aim for you to experience a range of settings by moving schools or classrooms during your time in STATSI, unless distance makes this impractical.

Do I choose my own mentor?

No. Coordinators and the Director work with principals to assign mentors that best suit your development needs. You’ll be consulted before final placement.

Can I change my school day?

Any change must be approved by your coordinator and suit both the school and your mentor.

How will I know if I am progressing well?

You’ll receive regular feedback from your mentor, coordinator, and university. Coordinators also conduct school visits, and you’ll have reflection opportunities throughout your journey.

What happens if I decide teaching isn’t for me?

Speak with your coordinator to discuss your situation. If you choose to leave, the Director will be notified and a formal process will follow due to your contract with CET.

Pay, Hours and Employment

What can I expect to be paid each fortnight?

Cadets are paid at a Teacher Assistant rate, working 7.6 hours per day and 30.4 hours per fortnight.

What is the time commitment for this position?

Cadets work two full days per week — one in school and one (usually Thursday) at a CET centre. If the school day is shorter than 7.6 hours, remaining time should be used for preparation and study.

Do I get paid during holidays and practicums?

Yes. Cadet wages are averaged across 52 weeks, meaning consistent pay over holidays and practicum periods. You may also be eligible for government funding during practicums.

Will I be able to work in a CET school after completing my cadetship?

Yes. We actively support cadets in securing ongoing roles in Catholic Education Tasmania. You’ll list your preferred schools in your final year, though placement depends on available positions.
We encourage all graduates to remain with CET for at least two years after qualifying as teachers.
