The Teacher Cadet Program at St Thomas Aquinas Teaching Schools Institute has seen remarkable growth since its inception in 2021. From a modest start with just five cadets, the program now boasts over 50 participants, reflecting its expanding influence and the growing demand for future educators. This evolution speaks to the program's commitment to preparing teachers with the practical experience and skills necessary to succeed in diverse educational settings.
On December 12, 2024, the Institute celebrated a significant milestone; the inaugural graduation of nine teacher cadets. This event not only recognised the hard work and accomplishments of the graduates but also underscored the program's expanding influence in the education sector. The ceremony, held in the presence of family, friends, mentors, and distinguished guests, began with a moving Mass that set a reflective and celebratory tone for the day. It was a moment to honour the cadets' dedication to their profession and to acknowledge their readiness to make an impact in classrooms across the region.
Kathy Gaskin, Director of the Teaching Schools, expressed her pride in both the graduates and the program’s development. She spoke of the unique challenges faced by many of the cadets, especially those who have chosen to teach in remote or high-needs communities. "They have demonstrated exceptional strength, courage, and empathy," Mrs Gaskin remarked. "These graduates are prepared to face the challenges of teaching and are ready to unlock the potential in every student they encounter."
The program’s diversity of school settings allowed Joshua Prichard, who has been part of the program since its first year, to gain a broader understanding of pedagogy and classroom management, preparing him for the challenges he will face as a teacher. Joshua emphasised the hands-on experience the program provided. “The opportunity to observe and learn from multiple teachers with different teaching styles was invaluable,” he said. “This real-world exposure gave me the confidence and practical skills I need to succeed as an educator.”

The program’s emphasis on teamwork and peer support was instrumental in fellow cadet Josephine Mamic’s development as an educator. Josephine spoke to the collaborative nature of the program and how it equipped her with essential classroom management skills. “The cadetship encouraged collaboration and the sharing of strategies among peers,” Josephine explained. “This exchange of ideas helped us develop a toolkit of approaches that we can apply to manage student behaviour effectively and foster a positive learning environment".
The Teacher Cadet Program has played a pivotal role in preparing these graduates to enter their teaching careers as confident, capable educators. Their journey has been one of growth, both professionally and personally, within a supportive and dynamic learning environment. As they embark on their careers, St Thomas Aquinas Teaching Schools Institute is confident that these graduates will continue to inspire and positively impact the classrooms they enter.
Catholic Education Tasmania extends its heartfelt congratulations to the graduates of the Teacher Cadet Program.
