ICT is at the centre of modern schooling, with everything from computers and iPads through to phones and security systems being managed by skilled ICT staff.

Ryan McQueen is an ICT Client Services Support Officer for Catholic Education Tasmania (CET), supporting schools in the state’s South, and this exciting and essential mission is what drew him to the role.

With recruitment now underway for Support Officer roles within the ICT Client Services team, Ryan has shared his story as an employee of CET for the past four years.

“These days pretty much anything you touch is IT related or internet related. A lot of people don’t realise how much is under our scope, basically anything that isn’t on pen and paper is run through or set up by us.”

The ICT Client Services team staff the help desk and attend schools onsite to fix issues, which provides a nice mix of work opportunities.

“It is really nice when you visit a school and are able to say ‘I have fixed that computer’ or ‘I have set up that classroom of iPads’. Meeting the teachers you have been helping is great too,” Ryan said.

Dealing with ICT issues in real time requires a certain amount of ingenuity, and part of the fun of the ICT Client Services team is working together to resolve them.

“When it comes to solving problems we have a room full of people who are all very smart and we do a lot of brainstorming to find the best solution quickly. I very much enjoy the team I work with, we have a lot of fun,” Ryan said.

ICT is both a natural fit and the culmination of a lifetime passion for Ryan.

“I’ve always wanted to work in IT. Basically my entire life is around computers - gadgets, games and new technology are fascinating to me,” Ryan said.

“ICT is a huge growth area too, so there is an infinite amount of branches you can go into so you will never be without a job.”

With schools getting more devices and technology daily, Ryan is enjoying being at the centre of this exciting new chapter in modern schooling.

“It really keeps you on your toes.”
