Professional Learning Communities and Collaboration
The Gonski report Through Growth to Achievement: Report of the Review to Achieve Educational Excellence in Australian Schools says ‘embedding professional collaboration as a necessity in everyday teaching practice’ is one of three key actions needed to promote individual student learning growth. The report identifies Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and Professional Learning Teams (PLTs) as illustrations of the power of collaboration.
The Gonski panel highlights three benefits for teachers of effective collaboration:
- More authentic engagement
- Ongoing improvement of professional practice
- Individualised support
Collaboration is one of the hallmarks of professional learning communities.
The Gonski review panel’s findings and recommendations on professional collaboration, mentoring, observation and feedback, and references to supporting research, can be found in Chapter Three (3.1) of the report.
