The season of giving it is a timely reminder to be thankful for the priceless gifts we have received from Christ our Saviour.
It is also a time to reflect on how we share our own God-given gifts and to appreciate the many opportunities we have to support our brothers and sisters in need. In this way we are called to see Jesus Christ in every person.
With giving trees, food drives and toy drives in abundance at this time of year, let's consider how we may be able to contribute to make someone’s Christmas a little brighter. Our time and prayers are the most valuable of all gifts we can give.
However you celebrate Christmas this year, we pray that you are surrounded by the joy and peace of Christ and we wish you a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.
‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.’
Matthew 5:8
This Sunday is the 3rd Sunday of Advent and the Gospel Reading is Matthew 11:2-11.
Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, “Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?” And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is he who takes no offense at me.”
Jesus Praises John the Baptist
As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind? Why then did you go out? To see a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, those who wear soft raiment are in kings’ houses. Why then did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written,
‘Behold, I send my messenger before thy face,
who shall prepare thy way before thee.’
Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
Acknowledgements of Country
As custodians of the lands and waters of places we share, it is important to acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their ongoing connection to culture.
Catholic Education Tasmania recently embarked on a project in conjunction with Ochre-Rain to develop individualised Acknowledgements of Country for each of our 38 schools across the state.
Schools were presented with the Acknowledgements and copies of the recently published research report into improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at a launch held in November.
As part of this launch CET was also grateful to be presented with the artwork ‘Blooming’ painted by Palawa/Wiradjuri artist Luana Towney. In this artwork the nine Tasmanian Aboriginal nations of long ago are represented as gumnuts, each line of water represents one of the 38 Catholic schools in lutruwita/Tasmania, and the traditional huts in the foreground represent the comfort that comes with security and safety. The huts are symbolic of the sharing of knowledge and culture that Aboriginal people in lutruwita/Tasmania continue to nurture.

RACT Community Education
The road is always changing. It is also challenging in different ways on different days. RACT has a team of educators that would love to come and present their free educational programs to your school.
They have their Yippee! story time program, designed to introduce basic road safety concepts to children up to 6 years old. This program encourages children to think about safe ways to travel in the car and when crossing the road.
RoadSafe is a fun, interactive online resource intended for Grade 3/4 students. It has 4 learning modules including how to be a safe pedestrian, passenger, when riding a bike/scooter/skateboard and what road safety signs are telling them. They work through one module with students, and teachers can continue using the resource after we leave.
For the older students, they offer a series of programs designed to set them up to be safe drivers. The classroom program Ready for the Road is designed for Year 10/11/12 students who are beginning their driving journey. The purpose of this presentation is to prepare young students with road safety knowledge to commence their learner driver experience. It also covers the responsibilities of car ownership and the graduated licensing system.
