This Sunday is the twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time and the gospel reading is Luke 15:1-10.
The Parable of the Lost Sheep
Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
So he told them this parable: “Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
The Parable of the Lost Coin
“Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

The aim of the National Catholic Education Conference 2022 is to bring together school and system leaders, educators, clergy and religious, students, educational professionals, researchers, families, and other groups interested in Catholic education to promote examples of best practice and plan future directions to continue the flourishing of vibrant and authentically Catholic learning communities across Australia. A number of CET Directors, Principals and staff had the opportunity to attend the conference.
The Conference focuses on networking opportunities, strengthening teaching strategies and leadership training. Participants are offered not only training but also a focus on their well-being to ensure they can gain knowledge for their professional development as well as their personal development and can take these ideas and skills back to their schools to share with other colleagues and students.
STEM Conference 2022
Hundreds of Year 4 to 10 students from 30 schools attended the recent It Takes a Spark! STEM Conference. This conference inspired and engaged forward thinking students, teachers and leaders in STEM.
This year the conference was held at St Brendan-Shaw College on 2 September and brought students, teachers, industry leaders and the University of Tasmania together for an immersive day of interactive workshops, networking, and problem-solving activities. Catholic Education Tasmania STEM Education Officer Chris Bracken said STEM-related jobs are increasing at twice the rate of other occupations in Australia. "There is a huge focus on how we are going to need educated people in years to come – including doctors, engineers, scientists, IT support, science teachers, allied health, and in a range of other industries." “A lot of that involves getting kids keen and enthused in STEM so they can decide on their pathway and follow it into STEM careers. Catholic Education Tasmania is heavily invested in STEM education, and the ‘It Takes a SPARK’ Conference is part of a suite [of initiatives] embracing the style of learning.”
Dyslexia 101
It is estimated that between 5-20% of students have dyslexia or related literacy learning difficulties. But are we as effective as we could be in supporting these learners? This one-day, hands-on, professional learning workshop unpacks the facts and figures on dyslexia, then examines the most important challenge to teachers of students with dyslexia – providing evidence-based instruction. They discuss which strategies these learners need, why they work, and guide participants to the resources they need. Finally, they examine the important adjustments to the curriculum, including assistive technology options, that students require to be successful.

Safeguarding Sunday
The Catholic Church in Australia marks Safeguarding Sunday on the second Sunday in September – September 11 this year. Assisted by a small working group from communications and safeguarding offices, a suite of resources has been prepared to help individuals, groups, parishes, schools and other ministries mark the day. The theme for this year’s resources draws on the theme for National Child Protection Week, which concludes on the day before Safeguarding Sunday; the theme is “Safe and Supported”.
