200 Years of Catholic Education
The charism of the founding order of St Brigid’s Catholic School in Wynyard continues to be lived out nearly a century after its opening.
On 15 October 2022 it will be 100 years since the then Archbishop of Hobart—Reverend William Barry—laid the foundation stone of the school and convent. Located on the site of the old Catholic Church in Jackson Street Wynyard, this new school was to be dedicated to St Brigid.
Officially opening in 1923, St Brigid’s Catholic School served as a hub for the Daughters of Our Lady of Sacred Heart. The Sisters not only taught students at the school, but also provided religious teaching to the children of Catholic families who lived in outlying districts.
The Sisters were devoted to home visitations, even in the depths of winter. They often made their way from house to house through knee-deep snow to ensure no family missed out.
After 49 years of dedicated service, the Daughters of our Lady of the Sacred Heart handed responsibility of the School and its community to the Sisters of St Joseph. The first lay Principal was appointed in 1984.
Over the years, St Brigid’s Catholic School became known for its wonderful and supportive community spirit where everyone rallies to help those in need. From travelling across the state to support a classmate; to the generosity and solidarity displayed to those experiencing loss; this is a community which embodies Catholic spirit by uniting to support the one and the many.
STEM It Takes a Spark Conference
An engaging experience was had by over 380 teachers and students attending the Inaugural Tasmanian 'It takes a Spark' Edu Conference.
With a focus on STEM and inquiry-based learning, both workshops and presentations were on offer, with a STEM EXPO offering multiple hands-on, engaging activities for teachers and students alike.
Dr Jennifer Lavers and Dr Stas Shabala, both from the University of Tasmania, inspired participants with their stories of STEM in action. For many teachers and students, the day was a springboard for their STEM journey back at their school and beyond!
Congratulations and thank you to all those involved in creating such a special STEM experience!
Faith in the Future at St John's!
Catholic students from across the country have joined together in a video performance of the national song ‘Faith in the Future’, to celebrate 200 years of Catholic education in Australia, including St John's Catholic School!
“As the oldest Catholic School in Tasmania, St John's Catholic School wanted to share our joy through AUSLAN, knowing that to sing and express words enables students to fully engage,” said Principal Megan Richardson.
The national song was composed by Fr Rob Galea, who surprised St John's students on the day of filming!
Visit from the Premier
Last year, Charudurka from Sacred Heart Catholic School in Launceston wrote to Premier Peter Gutwein to share a video of her presenting her COVID-19 scrapbook.
Last week Premier Peter Gutwein visited Sacred Heart to meet Charudurka and see her scrapbook in person!
