200 Years of Catholic Education
As part of our 200 Years of Catholic Education in Australia celebrations we will be sharing some special memories from our 38 Catholic Education Tasmania schools throughout the year. This week we celebrate 25 years of Guilford Young College!
In its 25 years, Guilford Young College has built on the religious traditions from which it was borne to create a community renown for academic, spiritual, cultural, community service, and sporting pursuits.
Since it opened its doors in 1995, the College’s dedicated leaders and staff have worked hard to deliver a quality education to not only meet the academic and vocational needs to students, but to also nurture their sense of achievement and belonging.
Inaugural Principal—leading the College from 1995 to 2003—Sr Pamela Davis said “my fondest memory is seeing those students all in their own way and in their own capacity doing their best and feeling they had achieved”.
Acknowledging the role that environmental factors play in education, former College Dean and Principal of the College from 2004 to 2016, Mrs Bobby Court said also paying particular attention to the facilities was important.
“In my mind, every student deserved not only the finest education and the best opportunity but they also were deserving of an environment which was comfortable and warm and well-appointed,” says Mrs Court. “It just built the whole sense of worth around students and for our staff who were just wonderful all throughout.”
Echoing Mrs Court, current Principal Mr Craig Deayton values the contribution of staff towards the success of the College.
“We’ve got such a wonderful staff with such wonderful attributes outside of their teaching as well. A lot of our teachers are specialists in other fields,” says Mr Deayton. “We have a wonderful quality of teaching capacity here.”
As students only attend the College for two short years, the special dedication put towards creating a sense of belonging for both students and staff is a particularly important aspect in the success of the College. A tremendous College spirit exists with students and staff taking a deep fondness for the College with them into life beyond GYC.
As part of their anniversary celebrations, Guilford Young College invited one of the first school captains, Mr David Palmer, back to the College to reflect on the past 25 years and discuss the bold vision for the future as part of Towards 2023.
